A Student Reflection on St. Mary Student Parish
I chose UM because it was the best choice for my career path. I expected that deepening my faith would be a major challenge and that I wouldn’t get much support. To my great surprise and delight, St. Mary’s has taught me the essence of the Catholic faith and encouraged that faith to a depth I didn’t know existed. I have learned that Christ’s love is an invitation - not an obligation. Teaching First Sunday catechism has been my most important role at St. Mary’s because of its consistent and generative nature. Last year, two friends and I, taught 7th grade for the first time. Many of you are parents and I am sure you know the satisfaction of teaching a child something of significance and knowing that they have absorbed it. Teaching Catechism has taken me outside of the encapsulated life of a student and inspired me to grow in my faith in order to guide others. Maggie Horne, 3rd year undergraduate President, Newman Catholic Students Association, 2006-07
